Even among the rarest events in baseball, the triple play turned by the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale stands out. Most of these plays start with a hard grounder or liner hit right at an infielder, but this one started with a single. In fact, the Cubs put all of their first three batters on base to open the game. Matt Shaw and Alex Bregman both walked before Seiya Suzuki flopped a lob wedge into right-center to start the madness.
Bregman got a good read on the ball and was chugging around second, and Suzuki was looking to grab an extra base under the assumption that the throw would go home.
