National Girls and Women in Sports Day takes place on the first Wednesday in February every year. The day is known around the world to celebrate the women who have evolved sports through their accomplishments, hard work and recognition of the increasing participation in women’s sports. The date was officially etched in history on Feb. 4, 1987 by President Ronald Reagan in Proclamation 5606, and has continued to hold significance for decades since.
The day was named in honor of the late Flo Hyman. Hyman, a standout volleyball player, began her career at the University of Houston, in which she was the university’s first female scholarship athlete.
